[Review] SPY × FAMILY by Tatsuya Endo

manga | action | comedy

Master spy Twilight is unparalleled when it comes to going undercover on dangerous missions for the betterment of the world. But when he receives the ultimate assignment—to get married and have a kid—he may finally be in over his head!

Not one to depend on others, Twilight has his work cut out for him procuring both a wife and a child for his mission to infiltrate an elite private school. What he doesn’t know is that the wife he’s chosen is an assassin and the child he’s adopted is a telepath!

I don’t read much manga nowadays because my attention span is so short, but I’m glad for booktokers. Because this was a recommendation.

And what a recommendation, the last manga I read that made me laugh so much was Wotakoi. Yet, they are completely different mangas. Spy Family is full of action and situations so silly they are ridiculous. And I can’t get enough of that shit.

So in case you did not read the synopsis above, we have a spy known as Twillight and is a master of disguise. He works for the country of Westalis to stop the war with the country of Ostania. He receives the biggest mission of his life, the problem? He has to get a wife and a daughter. But this is not where it gets interesting. He not only gets a kid that’s an esper and cant READ HIS MIND, but also gets a woman to pose as his wife, but is also AN ASSASSIN. As you guessed, only the little girl knows everything.

Which is hilarious, because it’s a little girl, you know? And all Anya understands from the whole spy mission is that it is “for world peace” and that’s her motivation to go along with it. That, and leaving the orphanage she was in. But even though she tries her best, she also causes a lot of trouble. Her expressions are also the best, I laugh so hard at her faces. She is easily my favorite character.

Not gonna lie, I can’t say much about the wife, Yoru, because I feel like she has had a lot of development yet. But, I would give my life for her even though she could take care of it without much effort. She accepts playing the role of wife because she fears that the police would suspect her because she is still single. But everything works well for everyone! Even though everything is to get the police off her back, she does try to fill the role of wife and, sometimes, mother. I can’t wait to see more of her in the role of assassin. What we have gotten so far is great, but it has been rather light-hearted.

And then we have the head of the family. Lloyd Forger. His cover name during the mission. The one that brought everyone together. I love how he gets carried away when on the role of father or husband. The way he struggles with his feelings of being a spy and not getting attached, yet we get to see is starting to feel reluctant at the idea. He does his best to keep Anya and Yoru happy so that they don’t back away from going to school or continue the family charade. We don’t know anything about his past, so I don’t know if the whole family setting is doing something for him. Either reminding him of his family when he was a child or sort of fulfilling a long-lost wish of having one. But I can’t wait to see more of it.

So as you can see this is one hell of a dysfunctional family. But they are doing their best and my god is it hilarious and sweet as hell. I love their family dynamic.

Oh, did I mention they get a dog and is as special as all of them?
